Plans for a new cruise terminal at Auckland’s Bledisloe North Wharf have taken a step forward, with the Port of Auckland receiving provisional approval under the Government’s fast-track process.
The project is part of wider consent for new developments at both Bledisloe and Fergusson North wharves. If final approval is granted, the port will be able to build infrastructure it says is essential to meet future freight and tourism demand.
Port of Auckland chief executive Roger Gray said the Bledisloe development, which includes the cruise terminal, had been endorsed in Auckland Council’s Long-term Plan.
“It will help us meet Auckland’s freight needs, support the cruise industry, whilst also providing more access to the waterfront for Aucklanders and reducing congestion in the downtown ferry basin,” Gray said.
He said the separate Fergusson North Wharf project was aimed at ensuring the port could accommodate larger container ships.
The port has consulted with iwi, local communities and other stakeholders during the planning process, with feedback incorporated into the proposals.
Gray said the next step was working with an expert panel to confirm consent conditions. “We look forward to the confirmation of conditions and final approval so we can deliver this vital infrastructure our city can be proud of.”
Pre-construction works at Bledisloe North Wharf are expected to begin in September if the approvals are finalised.
