Viking has added a new ship to its fleet on Portugal’s Douro River, with the Viking Gyda officially handed over at the West Sea shipyard in Viana do Castello.

The vessel will operate exclusively on the Douro, sailing the company’s 10-day Portugal’s River of Gold itinerary. It has capacity for 106 passengers across 53 staterooms and was built with Scandinavian-inspired interiors.

“With its rich history, culture and winemaking traditions, Portugal continues to be a very appealing destination for our guests,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking. “We are proud to welcome the Viking Gyda to our growing fleet of award-winning river ships, and we look forward to introducing more curious travellers to Portugal and its ‘River of Gold’ in the years to come.”

The Gyda joins four sister ships already operating on the Douro: the Viking Helgrim, Viking Hemming, Viking Osfrid and Viking Torgil. Together, they bring Viking’s presence on the river to five vessels.

Viking has laid out ambitious growth plans, with 26 more river ships scheduled to join the fleet by 2028, alongside 10 new ocean ships expected by 2031. If completed, the expansion would see the company operate 112 river ships and 23 ocean and expedition vessels by the start of the next decade.
