American Airlines has taken delivery of its 1,000th mainline aircraft, marking the milestone with the arrival of a Boeing 787-9 at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on 29 August.
The aircraft, fitted with the airline’s recently introduced Flagship Suite seats, is one of eight Boeing 787-9s delivered since April. American has 30 of the type on order.
“We are excited to grow our fleet, adding even more aircraft that offer customers a premium travel experience,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. “Looking forward to our next 100 years, we are focused on elevating and reimagining the onboard cabin experience along with every aspect of the customer travel journey.”
The airline currently deploys the Boeing 787-9 on routes between Chicago and London Heathrow, Chicago and Los Angeles, and Philadelphia and London Heathrow. More services using the aircraft are planned, including flights from Dallas Fort Worth to Heathrow starting in November.
American also intends to extend the Flagship Suite product to additional routes. The suites feature privacy doors, wireless charging pads and a chaise lounge-style seat, while premium passengers are offered amenity kits with skincare and beauty products, slippers, duvets and dual-sided pillows. Meals in the premium cabin are served in multiple courses and paired with wine.
From later this year, the Boeing 787-9 will also operate on long-haul flights from Dallas Fort Worth to Auckland, Brisbane and Buenos Aires, as well as from Philadelphia to Zurich.
