Air Niugini has received its first Airbus A220-300 aircraft, leased from Azorra, marking a notable step in the airline’s fleet modernisation programme. The Papua New Guinea national carrier becomes the 25th airline in the world to operate the A220, which is now in service on five continents.

The plane, named “People’s Balus,” left the Airbus Final Assembly Line in Mirabel, Canada, for a delivery flight to Port Moresby, stopping in Vancouver, Honolulu, and Fiji along the way. Air Niugini currently has eight A220-100s on direct order with Airbus, with three A220-300s being leased.

The aircraft sports a special livery celebrating the 50th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s independence. Airbus said a team of 120 painters worked to create the intricate design, applying 11 distinct colours with a special airbrushing technique.

“This delivery is a milestone for Air Niugini’s modernisation programme,” an Airbus spokesperson said. “The A220 is designed to be efficient, flexible, and suited to a range of routes.”

Configured to carry 138 passengers, the A220-300 will join the airline’s regional and international fleet. The plane’s design features advanced aerodynamics, a lightweight airframe made from 40% advanced materials, and Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engines, which reduce fuel use and carbon emissions by 25% per seat compared with older aircraft. Airbus says the A220 can already operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel, with plans for full SAF capability by 2030.

“The A220 gives Air Niugini the range, efficiency, and comfort to connect various destinations in the region,” the spokesperson added.

Since entering service, Airbus has delivered more than 440 A220s to over 30 customers. The aircraft currently operates on over 1,800 routes to more than 480 destinations, highlighting its role in the small single-aisle market.
