Nelson Tasman’s tourism sector is set for a boost with a $50,000 Government contribution to support domestic marketing campaigns. The funding aims to help local businesses bounce back after severe weather disrupted the region earlier this year.

Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said the June and July floods hit the local economy hard.

“We know the region was hit hard by the severe weather and flooding events in June and July, and this has had a significant impact on local tourism and hospitality businesses,” Upston said.

She said a recent survey showed nearly 70 per cent of tourism and hospitality operators reported revenue losses from cancellations and fewer visitors.

“That’s why I’m pleased to announce the Government is providing this funding to ensure tourism continues to thrive in the region,” she said.

The money will go toward a marketing campaign aimed at encouraging Kiwis to visit Nelson Tasman.

“Domestic tourism is really important for the Nelson Tasman region, as it directly supports tourism and hospitality businesses, jobs and the local economy,” Upston said.

She added that while some parts of the region were still recovering, most were ready for visitors heading into spring and summer.

“Nelson Tasman is open for business and we encourage Kiwis to go and enjoy some of the excellent experiences and hospitality of the region.”

The funding is being drawn from the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy.
