Uzbekistan Airways has placed its biggest-ever aircraft order, confirming plans to buy 14 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, with options for eight more.
The deal was signed in New York during the United Nations General Assembly, where Republic of Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev joined Boeing and airline leaders to mark the milestone. The country’s Ministry of Transport also signed an agreement with Boeing to explore ways to grow Uzbekistan’s wider aviation sector.
“The Boeing 787 Dreamliner family has proven to be the cornerstone of our long-haul operations,” said Uzbekistan Airways chairman Shukhrat Khudaikulov. “With this new contract, we are further strengthening both our airline’s and our nation’s position as a leading aviation hub in Central Asia, while providing our passengers with greater global connectivity. This step reaffirms our ambitions and strategic commitment to sustainable growth.”
Uzbekistan Airways was the first airline in Central Asia to fly the 787, using its 787-8s to serve destinations across Europe, Asia and the United States – including a direct flight to New York. The new 787-9s will allow the airline to add capacity and reach more long-haul destinations.
“We value our nearly 30-year partnership with Uzbekistan Airways and will continue to support their growth strategy as they further connect the region and world,” said Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of commercial sales and marketing. “With its fuel efficiency and operational flexibility, the 787 Dreamliner will help Uzbekistan Airways expand into new markets, connecting more travellers to their rich culture.”
The 787 Dreamliner is known for its long range, lower fuel burn and quieter performance compared to older aircraft, making it popular with airlines looking to grow their international routes.
