American Airlines has completed the first passenger flight of its new Airbus A321XLR, flying from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The flight departed at 11 a.m. ET and carried more than 150 passengers. It marked the first time the aircraft has operated a scheduled service for a U.S.-based airline.

The A321XLR is configured with Flagship Suite®, Premium Economy and Main Cabin seating. Passengers on the inaugural service were given a small gift bag, including a specially designed flight tag marking the aircraft’s first transcontinental flight.

“We’re excited that you’re here today to celebrate the debut of this new aircraft to our fleet,” American’s Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said in a note to passengers on Flight 3. “From premium design details to Bluetooth connectivity to elevated entertainment, every feature on this plane has been thoughtfully crafted so you can enjoy transcontinental travel in comfort.”

American plans to introduce the A321XLR on additional routes from early next year as more aircraft are delivered. These include transcontinental services between Boston (BOS) and Los Angeles, and between JFK and San Francisco (SFO).

The aircraft will also be used on a new international route between JFK and Edinburgh (EDI), with service scheduled to begin on 8 March 2026.

Planned A321XLR routes and start dates include:

  • Boston (BOS) to Los Angeles (LAX) from 2 July 2026
  • New York (JFK) to San Francisco (SFO) from 7 May 2026

Tickets for these services are expected to go on sale later this month via aa.com and the airline’s mobile app.

On board, the aircraft includes 20 Flagship Suite® seats, 12 Premium Economy seats and 123 Main Cabin seats. Features across the cabin include high-speed Wi-Fi and seatback entertainment with Bluetooth connectivity.

Flagship Suite® seats offer direct aisle access, lie-flat beds, additional storage space and wireless charging. Premium Economy seats include winged headrests, calf and footrests, along with wireless charging.
