An Air New Zealand flight from Sydney to Christchurch was held up on the runway after a passenger went to the toilet just as the aircraft was lining up for take-off.

Flight NZ226 had been cleared for departure at Sydney Airport when the crew were forced to pause, holding the aircraft on the runway until the passenger returned to their seat.

The delay meant an incoming aircraft had to perform a go-around rather than land as scheduled, according to air traffic control recordings.

The plane eventually departed for Christchurch after the brief delay.
